We are pleased to announce
the 4th
Joint
Meeting of the TMS Silicofossil and Palynology specialist groups. The
meeting will take place on 31st March 2011 at the University of
Tromsø, Norway, and will be locally coordinated by Catherine
Stickley. Please
note that there is no registration fee for
the event. Non-members of TMS are welcome to attend.
As with previous joint meetings (UEA 1992, Cardiff 2004, Utrecht 2006),
this conference will take advantage of the shared interests and
expertise of these groups’ members, and will bring together
exciting new developments in silicofossil and palynological research.
The meeting will include a day of talks and discussions followed by a
wine reception. We also invite you to join us for dinner in the city of
Tromsø at a popular traditional restaurant.
We
welcome abstract submissions
for
oral presentations of 20--‐30 minutes duration including questions.
Submissions can be on any aspect of siliceous micropalaeontology or
palynology. Abstracts should not exceed 250 words, and should also
include the presentation title, names of authors and their
affiliations. Please use
the abstract template
(32KB .docx file) when preparing abstract submissions. Abstracts should
be submitted
by the
deadline
of 14
March 2011 to Phil Jardine
(Palynology Group
Secretary).
On
Friday April 1st there will be an
optional afternoon/evening tourist excursion (cost: 600 Norwegian
Kroner (NOK), per person; 370 NOK for seniors and children). The landscape
in northern
Norway is spectacular! For those
interested, we will arrange travel
on a round trip bus/boat excursion from Tromsø starting at
14.10. We will first take a bus out to Skjervøy
through
Lyngen. At 19.45 we board the Hurtigruten boat back to
Tromsø,
arriving there at 23:45**. An optional three-course dinner is available
in the restaurant onboard the Hurtigruten (cost ~380 Kr). Cafes and
bars also serve light meals and snacks onboard. Please send an email by
Monday March 7 to Catherine
Stickley, if
you would like to join us, stating if
you also want to book the 3-course dinner. Payments for the optional
excursion (with or without dinner) can be made in cash on the day.
**Please note if you choose to come on the excursion, it also means one
extra nights stay in Tromsø (April 1).
A range of accommodation choices is listed
here.
Don’t miss this opportunity to
take in some of the most spectacular scenery in Norway, and hopefully
catch the Northern Lights. Bring a camera!
Beautiful Tromsø
Tromsø
is a vibrant,
picturesque city nestled between
stunning mountains and fjords more than 300 km inside the Arctic
Circle. Known as the ‘Paris of the North’, it is a
popular tourist destination as well as the first, or last, mainland
port of call for scientists carrying out research in the Arctic.
