TMS Code of Conduct

Code of Conduct for TMS members and meeting attendees

The Micropalaeontological Society (TMS) was founded in 1970 and has become one of the world's leading learned societies in this field. The Society is a registered charity that promotes the study of micropalaeontology and its allied sciences through publication of original research, sponsorship of meetings and field excursions, provision of web resources and a programme of annual awards.

The Micropalaeontological Society operates several social media channels and holds regular meetings and events throughout the year. The Society Code of Conduct applies to the behaviour of participants and attendees at all events, both in person and virtual, and those who engage with our social media channels. By becoming a member of TMS, attending a TMS run event, and/or engaging with TMS on social media, you are expected to adhere to this code of conduct. Behavioural expectations

TMS has an active commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility. At all our events and on our social media channels, we value the attendance, contributions and presentations of diverse scientists from a range of backgrounds and experiences, and it is paramount that we create a harassment-free environment – both in-person and virtually. It is the expectation of TMS that meeting attendees and/or members on our social media channels behave in a courteous, collegial and respectful fashion towards each other. At society events this extends to volunteers, exhibitors and meeting facility staff. Attendees should respect common sense rules for professional and personal interactions, public behaviour (including behaviour in public electronic communications), common courtesy, respect for private property and respect for intellectual property of presenters, regardless of gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, marital or parental status, age, immigration status, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, ethnicity, nationality, religion (or lack thereof), socioeconomic background, educational background or career stage. Questions and discussions at events should be constructive and not demeaning or abusive. Discriminatory, harassing, or threatening behaviour towards other attendees, presenters, meeting volunteers, exhibitors or facilities staff and security will not be tolerated, either in personal or electronic interactions.

Digital images and social media

Do not photograph a poster or record a talk without the author’s express permission. While the default assumption is to allow open discussion of presentations on social media, attendees are expected to respect any request by an author to not disseminate the contents of their talk or poster, and to not share images of data and methods unless express permission has been granted.

Consequences

Engaging in prohibited behaviour will result in organisers taking appropriate action, including warning the offender and/or expulsion from the event or social media channel, and/or future events. Participants who are asked to stop prohibited behaviour will be expected to comply immediately.

If you are being harassed, notice that someone else is being harassed, or have any other concerns, please contact the event host, social media channel admin, or one of the TMS committee. If you are attending a virtual event, please inform the event host by email or direct chat message.
