By Air

Birmingham Airport has 140 direct flights and an additional 280 possible connections worldwide (http://www.want2gothere.com/bhx/destinations).

From the airport you can take the free ‘Air-Rail Link’ monorail system to Birmingham International Station (~3 minute journey). From Birmingham International there are at least 6 trains per hour (from Virgin Trains and Cross Country operators) to Birmingham New Street Station (in the city centre) and the journey takes ~ 10 mins and costs ~£4-7 for an open return depending on the time of day (See https://www.thetrainline.com/). As an alternative, there are taxis available and the cost (from the airport to the city centre) will vary between £20 and £50.

Birmingham is accessible from all London airports and other local airports. From London Heathrow, we recommend using the rail-air bus link to Reading Railway station, and then direct trains from Reading to Birmingham New St.

By train

Birmingham University has its own train station on campus called simply “University”.
Trains run every ~ 10 minutes from the cite centre Birmingham New Street Station to University. This takes about seven minutes and costs ~£3 for an open return ticket. It is then a five minute walk from University station to the main conference venues.
Birmingham New Street is connected with direct rail services to most major UK cities. Please check https://www.thetrainline.com/ for services and tickets.
It is always much cheaper to book advance tickets for off peak trains. NOTE it is also often cheaper to buy city-to-city advance tickets than to book journeys all the way through to University station: e.g. buy tickets between major cities – Manchester to Birmingham; London to Birmingham; Bristol to Birmingham etc, rather than Manchester to University etc.
Trains from London to Birmingham are available with three routes and operators:
London Euston – Birmingham New St; Virgin Trains. Quickest (~1h 20 mins) but most expensive, especially early at peak times (>£80 single). Advance off peak tickets can be <£20.
London Euston – Birmingham New St; London Midland. Slowest (>2 hrs) but cheapest.
London Marylebone – Birmingham Moor St; Chiltern Railways (~1h 40 mins), free wifi; nice trains, mid-price. ~10 minutes walk from Moor St to New St for connecting trains to University.
All are cheaper booked in advance.
Eurostar: the Eurostar terminal at St Pancras is 10 minutes walk to London Euston and direct trains to Birmingham.
By Coach
National Express (http://www.nationalexpress.com/home.aspx) and Megabus (https://uk.megabus.com/) offer services from many UK cities to Birmingham Coach Station, in the city centre. Then recommend the train from Birmingham New St to University.
By car

Parking on campus can be very busy and standard pay and display car parks are expensive. Available ones are;

– North East Car Park Multi Storey (access via Pritchatts Road) Sat Nav Postcode B15 2SA – North Car Park (access via Pritchatts Rd) Sat Nav Postcode B15 2SB

– Pritchatts Road Car Park (at the junction with Vincent Drive) Sat Nav Postcode B15 2QU – Pritchatts Park (next car park along after Pritchatts Rd car park)Visitor charges in all locations are: Up to 1 hour £2.00; 1-3 hours £3.00; 3-5 hours £4.00; 5-8 hours £6.00. More information on:

You can park “on the street” in Selly Oak / Selly Park (south of the Bristol Road / A38) for free and then walk ~10 minutes to campus. Again, finding spaces depend on the time of day.

[toggle title=”Accommodation”] Birmingham offers a diverse range of hotels, youth hostels, and Airbnb options. Further details of options will be provided in later circulars and on the website. Although accommodation is available near the UoB campus, we recommend staying in the city centre (close to New Street Station), where there is a greater variety of restaurants, pubs and nightlife. The UoB campus has its own train station (University station), and regular trains connect it to Birmingham New Street (two stops, seven minutes travel time) in the city centre, and Five Ways (one stop, three minutes travel time), which is conveniently located for many hotels. Regular buses also connect the University campus to the city.
